Biography: Competition

Hoil Yoon is a managing partner of Yoon & Yang LLC in Korea. His practice concentrates on antitrust, international business transactions, and international litigation and arbitration.

Prior to establishing Yoon & Partners (a predecessor of Yoon & Yang) in 1989, Mr Yoon practised law in the United States as a partner of Baker & McKenzie for 10 years. He served as a member of the board of directors of the Korean Bar Association, an ambassador for International Economy and Trade of the Korean government, a non-standing commissioner of the Korea Fair Trade Commission, and a judge of the Seoul District Court.

Mr Yoon is currently chairman of the Asia Competition Association and was chairman (2009–2011) of the section of antitrust law of the Seoul Bar Association. He is also currently a member of the competition policy advisory board of the KFTC. He was vice chair (2007–2009) of the international committee of the Korean Bar Association. He is a member of the ABA's section of antitrust law where he was a member of the international cartel task force and is currently a member of the international task force. From 2005 to 2009 he was the chairman of the Korea Competition Forum. Since 2002 he has been serving as a non-governmental adviser to the International Competition Network.

In April 2006 he received a national camellia medal from the Korean government for his contributions to the advancement of antitrust law. Also he has recently been named by international legal journals as one of the leading lawyers in antitrust, corporate, and dispute resolution. He has written numerous articles on antitrust and corporate law, including the Korea chapter he co-authored in the ABA's Competition Laws Outside the United States (2d ed 2011).

He received his JD, magna cum laude, from Notre Dame University, and his LLM and LLB from Seoul National University. He is admitted to the Bars of Korea as well as of New York, Illinois, Washington, DC, and the US Supreme Court.
