Biography: Environment

Gabrielle H Williamson, JD, is a partner in the Brussels and Düsseldorf offices of Heuking Kühn Lüer Wojtek. She is also the managing partner of the firm's Brussels office. She studied law at the University of Virginia School of Law, USA, from which she received her Juris Doctor degree, and at the University of Exeter.

Gabrielle Williamson has practised law for 30 years in the US and Europe - the last 20 in Düsseldorf and Brussels. Before this, she worked in Washington, DC, in private practice and as assistant general counsel of the US Chemical Manufacturers Association. She specialises in EU and German environmental, health and safety regulation; EU and German competition law, merger control, and state aids; and EU and WTO international trade law. She also advises on these areas of the law in: European M&A transactions, privatisations in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), and in legislative advice to CEE governments. She has published extensively on these subjects as well.

Mrs Williamson founded and chairs the European Environmental Lawyers Association (EELA), an organisation of over 150 legal practitioners of European environmental law in Europe; is the past chair of the International Bar Association's (IBA) environment committee; is a past senior vice chair of the IBA's antitrust and trade law committee and a former member of the council of the IBA section on business law; is the founding chairman of the IBA's subcommittee on European environmental law; is the previous chair of the IBA's women lawyers interest group (WIG); is a former member of the council of the public and professional interest division (PPID) of the IBA; is the previous secretary-treasurer of the PPID; and is currently the vice-chair of the PPID and a member of the IBA's management board, as well as a member of the geographical advisory board of Business Law International. Moreover, she is a member of the German environmental and competition law societies, the advisory board of BNA's antitrust and trade regulation reporter, and of the German and American chambers of commerce in Brussels.

Gabrielle Williamson is fluent in German and English (both at mother-tongue level) and French.
