Professor Dr Gerhard Wiedemann is a partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) group, based in the Düsseldorf office. He joined Freshfields in 1981 and became partner in 1984. He is a member of the Düsseldorf Bar. His practice focuses on competition law where he represents clients in all major areas (merger control, alleged abuse of market-dominating positions and cartel investigations).
Gerhard also specialises in competition law issues concerning the energy sector, in particular following the German deregulation of 1998, where he handled leading cases in the area of EC and German merger control (Veba/Viag, E.ON/Ruhrgas), abuse control (access to grids and gas pipelines) and vertical agreements (BKartA pilot case over long-term gas supply agreements). His recent practice also includes court cases concerning merger control in the local public transport sector (on behalf of Deutsche Bahn) and in the media sector.
Gerhard has published and authored a number of books and articles on EC and German competition law, such as Handbuch des Kartellrechts (1999), EC Merger Control Monitor (1998), and Kommentar zu den Gruppenfreistellungsverordnungen des EWG Kartellrechts (1989/1990).
