Biography: Arbitration

Professor Arnoldo Wald is a senior partner and founder of Wald e Associados Advogados.

Professor Wald has acted as a litigator and legal expert in litigation cases, and in the last 30 years also as counsel, arbitrator and legal expert in both domestic and international institutional and ad hoc arbitrations in Brazil, Europe and the US, under the rules of the ICC, UNCITRAL, AAA, ICDR and various Brazilian institutions. He has also represented clients before the Brazilian courts in arbitration-related judicial proceedings.

He has acted in disputes regarding construction, infrastructure, concessions, corporate law, among others, involving some of the largest Brazilian and transnational groups, as well as state-owned companies and state entities.

He is a member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, Vice-President of the ICC Brazilian Committee, President of its Arbitration Commission, and a member of the Latin American Group of the ICC Arbitration Commission. He is also editor-in-chief of the Revista de Arbitragem e Mediação and author of books and articles in many fields of law. He was also the author of several legislative bills that have turned into law.

He was ranked by Chambers Global (2009, 2010 and 2011) as the Brazilian leading lawyer in arbitration and litigation, one of the 'most in demand arbitrators', as well as one of 'Latin America's Top Twenty Arbitration Experts'. According to specialized press, Professor Wald is the most admired lawyer in Brazil and one of the most quoted authors by the Brazilian superior courts. He is also a frequent speaker at international conferences.

Professor Wald is a professor of the Rio de Janeiro State University and a doctor honoris causa from the University of Paris II (1998). He is a member of the Brazilian Bar and was avocat à la cour in Paris. He was chairman of the Brazilian SEC, member of the National Monetary Council and general attorney of the State of Rio de Janeiro. He is fluent in English, French and Portuguese.
