His representative transactions include advising Standard Bank on the recent acquisition of 20 per cent of its share capital by Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (then the largest direct foreign investment into South Africa and the largest outward investment by a Chinese corporate); advising on the merger of Standard Bank's asset management business with that of Liberty to form Stanlib; the disposal by Merrill Lynch of its private client investment business; the acquisition by IBM of PWC's consulting business; and advising Associated British Foods on their recent acquisition of Illovo Sugar.
He also advises on black economic empowerment (BEE) transactions, and he acts for banks and borrowers in various forms of bank lending transactions.

Jon specialises in mergers and acquisitions, corporate law, corporate governance, capital markets, securities law and banking law. His particular expertise lies in complex corporate transactions of listed and unlisted companies, takeover bids, bid defences and corporate and group restructurings.
Jon has been lead partner in many of the largest and most significant corporate transactions in South Africa. He regularly represents multi-national clients and some of the largest South African corporations. Some of the representative transactions in which Jon has acted as adviser include: IBM in the acquisition of PWC's consulting business; Standard Bank in the merger of its asset management business with that of Liberty to form Stanlib; Merrill Lynch in the disposal of its private client business to Investec and Sanlam; Armgold in its merger with Harmony Gold; Nampak in its acquisition of Malbak; and JP Morgan, Standard Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, Absa Bank and Nedbank on the financing of the transaction whereby Lonmin created Incwala Resources and Associated British Foods on their acquisition of Illovo Sugar. He has also advised on a number of Black Economic Empowerment transactions in South Africa.
Jon has frequently lectured on corporate law and general commercial topics and has also written on these subjects. Jon joined the firm in 1977 where he served his articles. He became a partner in 1979, and has been a member of the compensation and executive committees of the firm for many years.
Jon studied at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg where he obtained a B Comm in 1974, an LLB in 1976 and a higher diploma in income tax law in 1981.
