Matthias Scherer has acted as counsel in international arbitration proceedings in Switzerland and abroad, both ad hoc and administrated (ICC, Swiss Rules, UNCITRAL, ICSID, etc) in more than 100 cases. He is experienced in disputes involving most aspects of commercial transactions, subject to a variety of procedural and substantive laws (civil and common law). The emphasis of Mr Scherer's practice is on joint venture, shareholders, M&A, construction and engineering, telecom and state-investor disputes. Mr Scherer is regularly appointed as arbitrator by leading arbitration institutions (ICC, Swiss Chambers, LCIA, and the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC)). He also frequently represents parties in arbitral matters before the Swiss Supreme Court.

Mr Scherer has published extensively on arbitration. He holds several editorial positions, including editor of the journal of the Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA Bulletin), co-editor of the Swiss International Arbitration Law Reports and an editorial board member of the International Arbitration Law Review, which are among the leading publications within the field of international arbitration. He is a member of several arbitration associations and bodies, and a past member of the arbitration committee of the Swiss Chambers and of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce and Industry (arbitration subject to the Swiss Rules of International Arbitration) (2007 to 2010) and of the arbitration committee of the International Bar Association (IBA) (vice chair, 2009 to 2011; chair of the conflicts sub-committee, 2007 to 2009).
