Recognised as a leading competition lawyer in Europe, he focuses on general competition work, cartels and state aid as well as anti-dumping, countervailing duties and WTO trade law. In these areas Dr Schütte has primarily advised large international and German companies and has successfully led many competition and trade-related litigation cases before the European Court of Justice and the European Court of First Instance, some of them leading cases in their respective areas. His clients come from many sectors, including automotive, semiconductor, transport, food and nutrition, energy, and shipbuilding.
Dr Schütte has published several articles in the fields of competition, East German privatisations, state aid and anti-dumping. He lectures regularly on antitrust issues, as well as trade/WTO issues and state aid, and has served for several years as an officer of committee C - antitrust and trade law of the International Bar Association. He has also been a chairman of the International Bar Association's subcommittee C1 on trade and customs law.
Dr Schütte graduated from the Universities of Freiburg and Heidelberg in 1977 and holds the degree of Doctor of Laws (Dr iur) from the University of Hamburg (1985). He is fluent in German, English, French and Spanish.

Dr Michael Schütte, joint managing partner of Howrey's Brussels office, has more than 20 years' experience in antitrust, competition and trade law, as well as litigation before the European Court of Justice and the European Court of First Instance. A former managing partner of the Brussels office of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer until 2006, Dr Schütte also headed the Brussels office of Bruckhaus until the merger with Freshfields in 2000.
