Biography: Commercial Litigation

Andrew Salgo is senior commercial litigation partner in the Sydney office of Baker & McKenzie. He has extensive experience in handling complex commercial disputes before courts and tribunals and through alternative dispute resolution processes.

The disputes Andrew has handled include: landmark cases in the High Court of Australia in pre-trial discovery and contract; for the advertising industry on trade practices issues; for Unilever in defending claims concerning country of origin labelling; for Arthur Andersen, the auditors of the HIH Insurance Group, following the collapse of the HIH group; for McDonald's, defending a class action taken for over 6,000 consumers arising out of claims made about the conduct of an Australia-wide competition.

Andrew has had a particular interest in and exposure to class actions, a recent area of focus in Australian courts.

Andrew has served on the management committee of Baker & McKenzie (1989 to 1995 and from 2001 to the present) and is the chairman of the firm's Australian offices.

Andrew has also been a member of the federal civil litigation and alternative dispute resolution working groups of the Australian Law Reform Commission.
