Alan Ryan is a partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) group, where his practice focuses on EC competition law. He has considerable experience of complex merger reviews at EU and national level acting for both merging parties and third parties, and of article 81 and 82 investigations. He has extensive experience in several industries including the air transport, natural resources and healthcare sectors. He has advised airlines and investors in relation to strategic alliances, state aid matters and on investment in EU airlines. He has also published several articles on competition policy in the air transport sector.

Alan is currently based in the firm's Brussels office. He spent three years in the Washington, DC office practising EU law for clients mainly based in North America and was one of the only EU lawyers based in North America. In addition to EU competition law, he also has a solid understanding of US antitrust law and has particular expertise in coordinating cases reviewed on both sides of the Atlantic.

He has handled numerous merger notifications and other competition cases among which include working for Alcan Aluminium in its proposed mergers with Alusuisse and Pechiney and subsequently Rio Tinto; Swiss on its merger with Lufthansa; Rockwell Collins on its intervention in GE/Honeywell; the Irish Department of Transport on Ryanair/Aer Lingus and the Ferrovial-led consortium in its bid for BAA.
