Biography: Competition

Juan Rodriguez specialises in all aspects of EC competition law and has experience in advising companies involved in a broad range of industries, including financial services, extractive industries, media and communication, IT and consulting services, and pharmaceuticals and chemicals. He has particular experience in representing companies involved in merger review proceedings before the European Commission.

Recent matters in which he has been involved include representing: KarstadtQuelle in the European Commission's review of its acquisition of MyTravel Group; AXA in the EC review of its acquisition of Winterthur; Aventis in the EC review of Sanofi-Synthélabo's hostile bid for Aventis; Chiron in connection with its acquisition by Novartis; AIG in the European Commission's investigation into aviation insurance; the North West Shelf consortium on EC competition law issues; the Shah Deniz consortium; Cytec Industries in the EC review of its acquisition of UCB's chemicals division; Sidel in the EC review of Tetra Laval's bid for Sidel; Goldman Sachs in the EC review of its acquisition of Queens Moat Houses; Pharmacia in the EC review of its acquisition by Pfizer; IntesaBci in the EC review of the joint venture between IntesaBci and Lazard; and Renault in the review by national competition authorities of Claas's acquisition of Renault Agriculture. He has also advised complainants before the European Commission and national competition authorities. He is a member of the European Competition Lawyers Forum and is EC correspondent for the Canadian Competition Record.

Prior to joining Sullivan & Cromwell in 2000, he was EC competition law counsel at BP, a role that involved advising on major transactions, such as the BP/Amoco merger, BP's acquisition of ARCO and BP's intervention in the regulatory review of other mergers involving its competitors, and advising all of the BP group businesses on day-to-day competition law matters.

Mr Rodriguez has been recognised as a leading competition lawyer in Chambers Global: Guide to the World's Leading Lawyers for Business 2008, Chambers UK: Guide to the Legal Profession 2008, and Euromoney's Guide to the World's Leading Competition and Antitrust Lawyers. He was selected by Global Competition Review as one of the world's top 40 competition lawyers under 40 in its 2004 "40 Under 40" ranking.
