Dr Burkhard Richter is a partner in the Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) practice group, based in the Düsseldorf office. His areas of practice include competition and trade work. He has particular expertise in the competition law aspects of disposals and merger control as well as general antitrust law. His work includes the representation of companies in proceedings before national competition authorities and the European Commission, as well as before national and European courts, predominantly in merger control filings, notifications under Regulation 1/2003 and cartel investigations.
Inter alia, he represented Bombardier in its acquisition of Adtranz; Corning in its acquisition of Siemens' worldwide glass fibre and glass fibre cable business (Siecor); France Telecom on its merger with MobilCom; Microsoft on its merger with Visio; Degussa in its acquisition of Laporte; Saban in the acquisition of sole control over ProSiebenSat.1; Permira in the acquisition of sole control over Premiere; EM.TV and Karstadt in the DSF/Sport 1 transaction; Lafarge in the acquisition of the central European business of Gyproc; Vossloh in its acquisition of all shares of Cogifer SA, Continental in its acquisition of Phoenix; Unicredito in its acquisition of Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank; Lufthansa in the acquisition of sole control over Eurowings; MAN in the acquisition of sole control over Scania; Schwarz Pharma in UCB's acquisition of sole control over Schwarz Pharma; Altana in Nycomed's acquisition of sole control over Altana and KKR/Permira in the acquisition of joint control over ProSiebenSat.1; KKR/Permira in ProSiebenSat1's acquisition of SBS; Continental in its acquisition of Siemens VDO; Unicredito in its acquisition of Capitalia (Banca di Roma); AWD in Swiss Life's takeover of AWD; and Triton in its acquisition of Rütgers Chemicals.
Burkhard was born in Hamm, Germany, in 1954. He completed his legal education at the universities of Münster and Berlin. Burkhard speaks German and English. He is the author of numerous publications on antitrust topics.
