Biography: Competition

Andrew Renshaw is a Brussels-based partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) group. He managed the group's Brussels practice from 2002 to 2006. He is a UK solicitor and has advised clients on dealing with the European Commission since 1989.

Andrew, who speaks English and French, advises companies and governmental and international organisations on a range of EU competition and state aid issues. He has considerable experience of advising clients on high-profile mergers, joint ventures, licensing, distribution, cartel and market dominance issues across a number of industries.

He acts for both notifying parties and complainants before the European Commission, and represents clients before various merger authorities in the EU and before the European Court of First Instance. His recent merger matters include representing Alcan in its successful defence of the Alcoa hostile takeover bid and subsequently on the agreed cash offer by Rio Tinto to create the world's largest integrated aluminium company; Rolls-Royce in respect of the GE/Honeywell merger; and British Nuclear Fuels in its sale of Westinghouse to Toshiba. In the state aid arena, Andrew has recently advised BNFL on a number of proceedings, including in relation to the restructuring of the UK nuclear industry; Rolls-Royce in respect of research and development aid for various aircraft engine programmes; and three Baltic electricity companies in relation to aid issues raised by the proposal to build a new nuclear power plant in Lithuania.

Born in 1961, Andrew was educated at Bristol University and at the College of Europe. He has also taught EU law at the College of Europe, HEC in Paris and currently lectures at King's College, London. He has been a partner since 1997.
