Biography: Competition

Robert Pitofsky is counsel in the Washington office of Arnold & Porter LLP. Formerly the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), Mr Pitofsky's practice focuses on antitrust and consumer protection matters. In 2010, the Justice Department's antitrust division honoured Mr Pitofsky with the John Sherman Award, which recognises lifetime contributions to the protection of American consumers and the preservation of economic liberty. He was the chairman of the FTC from 1995 to 2001 and was FTC commissioner from 1978 to 1981.

Mr Pitofsky is a Sheehy Professor of Trade Regulation Law at Georgetown University Law Center; a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2000 to present); was the dean and executive vice president for Law Center Affairs at Georgetown University Law Center (1983 to 1989); and was a professor of law at New York University School of Law (1963 to 1970).
