Biography: Capital Markets

Stephen is a partner and executive committee member of Goodmans LLP and heads the firm's REITs and income securities group. Stephen has an extensive corporate and financial services practice with expertise in M&A, corporate finance, project finance, private equity, health care and international transactions. As well as the present publication, he is recommended by Chambers Global (corporate and M&A), The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory (corporate finance), The Lexpert/ALM Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada (income funds), PLC's Equity Capital Markets Handbook and Euromoney's Guide to the World's Leading Capital Markets Lawyers.

Stephen has acted on a substantial number of Canada's public offerings, including the largest IPO in the income securities sector and the largest bought deal in Canada's overall equity markets. He led the Goodmans team in structuring and implementing Canada's first publicly listed trust to own operating businesses, first cross-border REIT, first cross-border income fund, first offering of income participating securities and, most recently, the first common share IPO of a US business. Stephen has also acted on a broad range of significant public and private M&A and other complex transactions by private equity groups, companies and financial institutions. He frequently advises on governance matters and was retained by Industry Canada to undertake a study of income fund governance.

Stephen was the founding chairman and is a director of the Canada-South Africa Chamber of Business, and a director and chair of the governance committee of the Canadian Association of Income Funds. He is an author of The Canadian REIT Handbook.
