Biography: Insolvency & Restructuring

Rick Orzy is a senior partner and the co-leader of the national bankruptcy and restructuring practice of Bennett Jones LLP, one of the largest and most active practices in Canada. His practice covers all major areas of insolvency and restructuring, acting for creditors and debtors.

He is especially noted for his pre-eminent Canadian practice representing public and private placement bond holders, high-yield investors and secondary market (including distressed debt) investors in many of Canada's largest insolvencies, recently and currently including Stelco Inc, Ivaco Inc, Calpine Canada, Teleglobe Inc, SR Telecom Inc, AT&T Canada Inc, Parmalat Canada, Doman Industries Limited, Vicwest Corporation and Laidlaw Inc.

He also regularly acts for major foreign banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions and represents debtors, in each case in many of the most complex restructurings in Canada.

A substantial portion of his practice involves cross-border matters, including restructurings in the United States, the UK, Continental Europe and Central America. He has acted as Canadian counsel in many significant US-based restructurings over the past 20 years.

Rick writes and lectures regularly on insolvency and restructuring topics. He is listed in many Canadian and international publications on lawyers as a leading and highly recommended Canadian restructuring and insolvency practitioner and as a leading cross-border lawyer. He is a member of the Insolvency Institute of Canada and the American Bankruptcy Institute, and is a director of a number of charitable organisations.

Rick holds MBA and LLB degrees from a major Canadian university.
