After graduating from Harvard Law School, Hans Nater practised law in New York and, in 1975, founded the law firm Stiffler & Nater, Zurich, which he left after 30 years in order to become one of the founding partners of Nater Dallafior Rechtsanwälte, a firm focusing on representing domestic and international clients in complex proceedings before state courts, administrative bodies and arbitral tribunals, including the coordination of disputes in different jurisdictions.

Hans Nater is an arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and on the list of Swiss ICC Arbitrators. He has served as a member of the CAS ad hoc division at the 2002, 2004 and 2006 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Athens and Turin respectively and as an arbitrator of the Claims Resolution Tribunal for Dormant Accounts in Switzerland (CRT). He was president of the Zurich Bar Association and vice president of the Swiss Olympic Committee.
Hans Nater's published writing includes works on professional legal services, product liability, corporate governance and telecommunications.
He speaks German, French, English and Italian.
