Biography: Competition

James Mutchnik is a partner in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. He focuses on antitrust and trade regulation and white-collar criminal defence. Mr Mutchnik joined the firm from the United States Department of Justice, antitrust division, where he was a criminal trial lawyer from 1991 to 2000. He has extensive criminal and civil trial and investigative experience, including the successful prosecution of three former executives for price-fixing in the lysine market. At the firm, he has counselled clients on all aspects of antitrust law and is active in numerous antitrust litigation matters for clients across the country. Praised for "really taking the lead in antitrust merger work"' Mr Mutchnik was selected as one of Chambers USA, America's Leading Lawyers for Business in Antitrust in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.

Mr Mutchnik earned his law degree from Northwestern University School of Law. He holds a bachelor of science degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Mr Mutchnik has lectured extensively on antitrust and white-collar crime investigations for trade associations, law enforcement organisations, law schools and corporations across the country and abroad. He is the vice chair of the American Bar Association antitrust law section - criminal practice and procedure committee; a former chairman of the Chicago Bar Association's antitrust law section; and a member of the Illinois State Bar Association's antitrust and consumer protection law section - section c council.
