Biography: Competition

Dr Frank Montag is a senior partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) group, based in the Brussels office. A member of the Brussels and Cologne bars, Frank's practice focuses on European and German competition and trade law.

He has represented companies across a wide range of industries before national competition authorities and the European Commission, in particular merger control filings, cartel investigations and proceedings under Regulation No. 1/2003. In addition, Frank has represented companies and public institutions in state aid proceedings as well as trade cases and has also acted for companies, trade associations and governments in several dozen proceedings before the European Court of First Instance, the European Court of Justice and the European Free Trade Association court. Frank has, for many years, been recognised as a true leader in his fields by all principal legal directories.

He serves as the chairman of the board of Studienvereinigung Kartellrecht (the Antitrust Lawyers Association for Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and is a member of the committee of management of the European Air Law Association. From 2001 through 2008, he has participated as a non-governmental adviser to the US DoJ, the European Commission and the German Bundeskartellamt in the International Competition Network (ICN). Frank has held numerous management positions in the firm including co-head of the global ACT group. He is a co-general editor of one of the leading law commentaries on European and German competition law and the author of numerous articles in leading law journals.

Frank graduated from the United World College of the Atlantic, Wales (IB 1976) and the Universities of Bonn (Dr iur 1984) and Georgia, USA (LLM 1982). He speaks German, English and French.
