MJ Moltenbrey is a partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's US antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) practice group, based in the Washington, DC office. She joined the firm in May 2002. She represents clients before the DoJ, FTC and in federal courts on a wide array of issues, including mergers, civil and criminal conduct matters, and administrative proceedings. Representative clients include ArcLight Capital, Continental Airlines, Frito Lay, Industri Kapital, Infineon, Invensys, Monsanto, Swiss Air, and Xstrata.
Immediately before joining the firm, MJ was director of civil non-merger enforcement in the DoJ's antitrust division. In that position, she was the antitrust division's senior career official responsible for civil conduct investigations and litigation. During her 17-year DoJ career, MJ also served as chief of the civil task force and as trial attorney in the transportation section. Among the matters that MJ was involved in at the DoJ were United States v. Microsoft, the proposed merger of United Airlines and US Airways, and United States v Visa International et al. Although she has experience in a wide range of industries, she had a particular focus on the media, financial services, and transportation industries, as well as the application of antitrust law to intellectual property and internet issues.
MJ received her JD magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from Boston College Law School in 1984, and her BA magna cum laude from Boston College in 1981. She is admitted to the bars of Massachusetts and the District of Columbia.
