Biography: Competition

Jean Meijer advises on all aspects of South African competition law including merger control, cartel and other investigations, competition compliance and exemption applications.

She has obtained competition clearance for transactions in a wide variety of sectors, including the airline, chemical, gas, food and beverages, health care, mining and banking sectors. She represented Harmony in the attempted hostile takeover by Harmony of Gold Fields. She was a lead attorney in the opposition to the proposed merger between Sasol and Engen, which was prohibited by the South African competition authorities. She recently acted for the successful party in a landmark case in the Supreme Court of Appeal dealing with the interpretation of the per se prohibition on price fixing. Jean was the lead attorney in Harmony Gold's excessive pricing complaint against Mittal Steel, a landmark case which has resulted in the first finding of excessive pricing in South Africa.

Jean Meijer is recognised as one of South Africa's leading competition lawyers. She has BA and LLB degrees from Rhodes University and an LLM in competition and intellectual property law from the University of South Africa.
