Biography: Competition

Thorsten Mäger has been a partner with Hengeler Mueller since 2001.

Thorsten specialises in all areas of European and German competition law, focusing on merger control, cartel and abuse investigations, audit and compliance, advice regarding the day-to-day business and litigation.

Recent merger control cases include MAN on the takeover by VW; BHP Billiton on the proposed iron ore production joint venture with Rio Tinto in western Australia; TenneT on its acquisition of the extra-high voltage grid of EON; OMV on its proposed takeover of MOL; E.ON on its proposed acquisition of Endesa; Bayer on the sale of its worldwide diagnostic business to Siemens; RWE on the merger of downstream oil business of Shell and Dea. Thorsten has been involved in major cartel investigations including building materials, decorating paper, engines, fittings, polyurethane foam, freight forwarding, hydrants, luxury cosmetics, ophthalmic lenses, rail tracks and switches, and trucks. He has been representing a company in the landmark Pfleiderer case before the European Court of Justice concerning access to leniency statements. Thorsten advises clients in follow-on litigation, for example, AkzoNobel in the hydrogen peroxide case.

Thorsten is editor and co-author of a German handbook on EC competition law (Europäisches Kartellrecht, 2nd edition, 2011).
