Biography: Competition

Thorsten Mäger has been a partner with Hengeler Mueller since 2001.

Mr Mäger specialises in all areas of European and German competition law. He has been responsible for a large number of merger control notifications to the European Commission and the German Federal Cartel Office and has been coordinating large merger control cases in European and non-European jurisdictions. Mr Mäger has also acted in various European and German cartel and abuse cases. He frequently represents companies before national and European courts.

Recent competition cases handled by Mr Mäger include BHP Billiton on the proposed iron ore production joint venture with Rio Tinto in western Australia, TenneT on its acquisition of the extra-high voltage grid of E.ON, OMV on its proposed takeover of MOL, E.ON in its proposed acquisition of Endesa, Bayer on the sale of its worldwide diagnostic business to Siemens, RWE on the sale of RWE Umwelt to Remondis, and the merger of downstream oil business of Shell and Dea (for RWE Dea). Mr Mäger is currently involved in a number of cartel investigations before the European Commission and the German Federal Cartel Office.

Mr Mäger is editor and co-author of a German handbook on EC competition law (Europäisches Kartellrecht, 2006) and co-author of a German commentary on EC and German competition law (Münchener Kommentar, 2008).
