Biography: Commercial Arbitration

Fernando Mantilla-Serrano is a partner in Shearman & Sterling's international arbitration group.

He has acted as lead counsel in more than 25 arbitration cases, both in ad hoc (UNCITRAL and EDF Rules) and institutional proceedings (ICC, ICSID, IACAC-ICDR, Corte de Arbitraje de Madrid, Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie de Bruxelles, Zurich Chamber of Commerce) applying the laws of Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, England, France, Italy, Mexico, Moldova, the Netherlands, New York, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela.

Mr Mantilla-Serrano has served as sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator or chairman in more than 15 domestic and international cases concerning international contracts, construction, agency and distribution, oil and gas, banking, energy, corporate, sports and trade law.

He holds a law degree and a MSc in Economics from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, a MCJ (LLM) from New York University (Fulbright Scholar), a DEA in International Private Law and International Trade and a DSU in EU Law from the University of Paris II.

Mr Mantilla-Serrano is the member for Colombia of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and member of the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators. His articles on arbitration have been published in Arbitration International, Revue de l'Arbitrage, Journal of International Arbitration and Revista de la Corte Española de Arbitraje.

He was one of a four-member commission that drafted Spain's new arbitration act.

Mr Mantilla-Serrano is admitted to the Bars of Colombia, New York, Paris and Madrid. He speaks Spanish, English, French and Portuguese.
