Biography: Shipping & Maritime

Jonathan Lux joined Ince & Co in 1975, becoming a partner in 1983. He was instrumental in setting up and then served for two years as senior partner of the Hamburg office of Ince & Co, returning to London in 2004.

Jonathan has direct commercial experience in the maritime industry and in the related fields of energy, insurance and international trade and commerce. He advises the major P&I Clubs, their shipowner and charterer members and major insurers. He is a leading expert in shipping and commercial law with particular expertise in bunkers and is co-author of the only legal text-book on bunkers - Fisher & Lux on Bunkers (now in its third edition).

Jonathan's experience in advising on maritime issues has led to the development of his practice in offshore energy as well as renewables. He acts for oil industry interests, including major offshore construction, drilling and other oilfield services contractors in support of their worldwide services. He advises on the construction, employment and operation of offshore drilling units and production platforms. He also advises clients on preparation, drafting and negotiation of contracts for offshore structures and support vessels, including the construction and charter of FPSOs and pipelaying vessels.

A pioneer in the introduction of alternative dispute resolution into his fields of practice, Jonathan is also a practising arbitrator and Fellow of the Institute of Arbitrators. He is an accredited mediator who has conducted numerous mediations over many years achieving an enviable success rate and has participated in court mediation schemes. He lectures widely and has written numerous articles on the subject of mediation. He is co-author/editor of numerous publications, including ADR and Commercial Disputes (Sweet & Maxwell, 2003); The Law of Tug, Tow and Plotage; Maritime Law Handbook; Corporate Social Responsibility and Getting the Deal Through - Shipping 2010 . Most recently, Jonathan also contributed to Responsible Business: How to Manage a CSR Strategy Successfully (Wylie 2010) and an IBA e-book: Mediation Techniques (2010).

Jonathan is the Honorary Consul to Cape Verde in London.

He was voted Shipping and Maritime Lawyer of the Year 2010 (Who's Who Legal).
