Biography: Internet & e-Commerce
Peter Leonard is one of the founding partners of Gilbert + Tobin. His primary focus is commercial and corporate transactions and structuring for corporations active in the internet business, technology, media and communications fields.Peter's experience includes structuring and negotiation of e-commerce and e-commerce and marketing platform deals, mobile and internet payment systems, communications services and cloud delivered services agreements, managed services and systems integration arrangements, content and brand licensing contracts, international technology licensing, electronic and print publishing and distribution arrangements, and media and technology joint ventures. He is co-editor of the leading text Communications Law and Policy in Australia and has advised and written extensively on communications and internet regulation, deal structuring and privacy and data protection. He regularly advises on transactions in Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia and New Zealand.
Peter is ranked as a leading lawyer in all major legal directories, including Legal 500 2010/11 (TMT), Chambers Asia Pacific 2011 (TMT: Media and TMT: Telecommunications), PLC Which Lawyer 2011 (IT and e-commerce, Media and Telecommunications) and Best Lawyers 2011 (Telecommunications).
Peter is a director of the Internet Industry Association (IIA) Australia's peak internet industry body. He is a past chair of the technology committee of the International Bar Association (IBA) and a past vice chair of the IBA's communications committee. Peter serves on the Law Council of Australia's media and communications committee, the IIA's taskforces on convergence, cybercrime and mobile content, and the New Zealand Law Society's e-commerce committee.
Peter was a member of the Australian Attorney-General's expert group on electronic commerce, which issued the report leading to the Australian Electronic Transactions Act. He is also an active member of a number of committees of the American Bar Association.
