Biography: Insolvency & Restructuring

Partner based in Rome, Raffaele Lener specialises in financial services, banking, regulations and securities matters and his clients include banks, insurance companies, financial institutions and various Italian regulatory authorities.

Raffaele's experience includes assisting with the drafting of Italian financial and banking laws, such as the 1991 brokerage law, the 1993 banking law, the 1996 law on investment services and the Financial Law Consolidated Act of 1998. He has also worked on the privatisation of many state-owned companies, is one of the commissioners in the liquidation of EFIM Group, and was appointed as a liquidator of Banca di Credito di Trieste by the governor of the Bank of Italy in 1997. In 2007 following the UN resolutions regarding Iran, he was appointed as extraordinary commissioner of the Italian branch of Bank Sepah Iran.

In 2001 Raffaele was appointed a member of the Commission for the Regulation of Independent Authorities and in 2004 became a member of the Legal Certainty Group (a group of experts set up to help the EU Commission regulate clearing and settlement). He is also a member of the wisemen committee of Italy's regulated securities market TLX.

Since 1994, Raffaele has been a professor of securities regulation and private comparative law at the University of Rome, Tor Vergata; and also professor of commercial law at the private University Luiss in Rome.

Raffaele graduated (with first class honours) from the University of Rome. Formerly general counsel of Assogestioni (Italian Association of Investment Fund Managers), he joined Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer as a partner in 1998. Of Italian mother tongue, he speaks English, French and German.
