Biography: Commercial Arbitration

Dr Richard H Kreindler is a partner in Shearman & Sterling's international arbitration group. He also specialises in cross-border litigation and compliance/anti-corruption matters.

He has handled numerous commercial, construction, infrastructure and investment arbitrations across the globe under the rules of the leading arbitration regimes and institutions as counsel, party-appointed arbitrator, sole arbitrator and chairman. He has also actively advised leading international companies on compliance-related inquiries and compliance programmes, including in the context of continuing government investigations of corruption conducted in Europe, the United States and elsewhere.

Dr Kreindler has authored approximately 300 publications and presentations on international dispute resolution. His major publications include Strafrechtsrelevante und andere anstoessige Vertraege als Gegenstand von Schiedsverfahren: Zum Vorgehen von Schiedsgerichten bei Rechtsverletzungen von Vertragsparteien [Illegal and Other Objectionable Contracts as the Subject of Arbitration] (Verlag Recht und Wirtschaft); Transnational Litigation: A Practitioner's Guide, three volumes (Oceana/Oxford); and Transnational Litigation: A Basic Primer (Oceana/Oxford). He has served as a member of the editorial or advisory board for a number of leading publications. He is a member of the Council of the ICC Institute of World Business Law.

Dr Kreindler is a graduate of Harvard, Munich, Columbia and Münster Universities. He is an adjunct professor of law at the Universities of Münster and Mainz in Germany. He has also lectured widely outside of Germany, including annually since 1992 at the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators International Diploma programme at Keble College, Oxford. He is a Fellow and chartered arbitrator of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London.

Dr Kreindler is a member of the New York and Paris Bars. He speaks English, German and French.
