Biography: Competition

James B Kobak Jr chairs his firm's antitrust practice, which is principally located in the firm's New York and Washington, DC offices but includes attorneys in all offices. In addition to defending clients before the agencies and in the courts and arbitral forums, the practice regularly represents clients in mergers and joint ventures, designs and implements compliance programmes and provides ongoing advice to business units and industry consortia.

The firm is especially active in competition and intellectual property issues. Mr Kobak has written and lectured extensively on the subject and has been asked to testify on the relationship between antitrust and intellectual property law. He is a former chair of the ABA antitrust section's intellectual property committee and the trade regulation committee of the New York County Lawyers' Association as well as a member of the American Law Institute. He has served on several ABA antitrust section task forces including those that prepared monographs on the trial of a patent-antitrust case, on the DOJDoJ/FTC Intellectual Property Guidelines and on the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He was chair of a task force and editor and primary author of the ABA's publication Patent Misuse: Licensing and Litigation. Mr Kobak has received adjunct appointments at the Virginia and Fordham Law Schools, teaching seminars on intellectual property and antitrust.

Mr Kobak received his law degree from the University of Virginia where he was the associate editor of the Law Review and his undergraduate degree magna cum laude from Harvard College.
