Biography: Competition

Dr Martin Klusmann is a partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) practice group. He is also the managing partner of the Düsseldorf office. He has been a Rechtsanwalt since 1992 and is also admitted to the Brussels bar. He became partner in 1997. Martin specialises in German, European and international competition and antitrust law, with a special focus on mergers and cartel work.

He has been involved in leading roles in the following major investigation cases: steel beams, alloy surcharge and alloy surcharge readoption; large diameter and seamless tubes; methionine; vitamins; Austrian banks; foreign exchange fees; cement and ready-mix concrete; graphite electrodes; specialty graphite; electrical and mechanical contacts; sodium gluconate; plasterboard; industrial insurance; sorbates; organic peroxides; international roaming; MCAA; marine hoses; bananas; rubber chemicals; and elevators. Martin has led many internal audits and investigations in these and other cases and has represented clients before the competent competition authorities, national and European courts, as well as arbitration tribunals. He has particular industry expertise in IT, chemicals and heavy industries. Recent clients include ThyssenKrupp, Vodafone, SGL Carbon, Hoechst, Chiquita, Continental and Knauf.

Martin was born in Duisburg, Germany in 1965. He studied law at the universities of Hamburg and Bochum, and holds a doctor of law degree (Dr jur) from the University of Bochum. In 1995, he was a visiting attorney at Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago. He is a co-author of Wiedemann, Handbuch des Kartellrechts.

Martin speaks German, English and some Dutch.
