Biography: Arbitration

Doug Jones is an international infrastructure and dispute resolution lawyer, and a Sydney-based partner in the Australian law firm of Clayton Utz, where he leads the international arbitration group.

Doug has extensive experience as arbitrator and counsel in international and domestic commercial and investor state arbitrations. He is a chartered arbitrator and door tenant at Atkins Chambers, London. He is a professorial fellow at Melbourne University and an adjunct professor at Notre Dame and Murdoch Universities, Australia.

He is currently the president of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration, member of the LCIA Court and was president of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, London for 2011. He is a foundation fellow and granted arbitrator of the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia, president of the Dispute Resolution Board Foundation Australasia, member of the ICC Australia arbitration committee, fellow of the Western Australian Institute of Dispute Management and a member of a number of panels of international arbitral bodies including an Australian government nominee on the ICSID panel of arbitrators.

Doug is acknowledged as a highly regarded arbitrator and is constantly ranked in a number of leading publications such as Chambers Global where was recently singled out in Chambers Asia Pacific 2011 as one of only five 'star individuals' and a key player for international arbitration, in Australia.

In 1999, Doug was made a member of the Order of Australia for services to dispute resolution.

Biography: Construction

Doug Jones is a partner at Clayton Utz, where he is the national head of the major projects, construction and international arbitration practice groups. He practises in the following areas of law: major projects and infrastructure; construction; procurement (including large-scale infrastructure and construction); transport and logistics; government services and international arbitration.

Acting for owners (both government and private sector), financiers, contractors, consultants and subcontractors, Doug has advised extensively on project structuring and financing, contract drafting and advice during project implementation and dispute resolution for major infrastructure matters, including Department of Defence facilities and equipment acquisitions, airports, ports, roads and rail projects throughout Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and USA.

Doug has extensive experience as arbitrator and counsel in international and domestic commercial and investor state arbitrations.

He is a chartered arbitrator and was the president of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), London for 2011. Doug is also director of the Board of Roads Australia, president of the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration (ACICA), a foundation fellow and graded arbitrator of the Institute of Arbitrators & Mediators Australia, an arbitrator member of the Society of Construction Arbitrators (London) and the president of the Australian executive committee of the Dispute Review Board Foundation. He is an editorial board member of Global Arbitration Review, co-editor in chief of the International Construction Law Review, editorial board member of the International Trade and Business Law Review, and a member of the Melbourne Juris Doctor advisory board of the University of Melbourne. He is the author of Building and Construction Claims and Disputes, Construction Publications, 1996; Commercial Arbitration in Australia, Thomson Reuters, 2011 and contributor to The Expert in Litigation and Arbitration, LLP Limited 1999; The Commercial Way to Justice, Kluwer Law International 1999; and Arbitration World, European Lawyer 2004.

Doug has received numerous accolades to date, and was recently named one of only five 'star individuals' in Australia, by Chambers Asia Pacific (2011) for his work in construction and alternative dispute resolution.

He is a member of the Australian Order, having received the award for services to construction law and the development of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution, recognising 30 years contribution in those areas.
