R Scott Jolliffe is the chair and chief executive officer of Gowlings and a member of the Gowlings international strategic advisory group (GISAG). His areas of specialisation include patent, trademark, copyright, high-tech and product liability litigation. He also practises in the areas of licensing and commercial management of intellectual property; technology transfer; and food, drug and medical device regulation.

First and foremost a litigator, Scott is recognised as one of Canada's pre-eminent trial and appellate court lawyers in intellectual property and technology law. Scott has extensive international experience working with clients investing or operating in Canada and Canadian clients investing or operating internationally, particularly in the aerospace, chemical, medical devices and pharmaceutical sectors.

GISAG was formed to provide a strategic and business complement to the firm's already impressive legal capabilities, advising clients at the highest level on their international business needs. The group provides advisory services in the areas of corporate and business strategy, industry and organisational restructuring, government relations and lobbying, government restructuring and regulatory regime development, regulatory affairs, public policy strategy development, financing, international financial regulation, corporate governance and security advice, and planning and risk management. Working seamlessly with other Gowlings professionals, Scott and other members of GISAG help clients to manage risk and extract value in high-stakes international deals or multi-country expansions.

Scott also serves as a mediator in intellectual property and technology disputes and is accredited in this field by several international organisations.

With over 30 years of experience at Gowlings, Scott has acted as senior counsel on numerous landmark intellectual property cases in Canada. He regularly serves as an adviser to major Canadian and international corporations, including food, drug and medical device companies, technology and manufacturing-based companies, financial institutions, and chemical and natural resource companies.

Scott served as the firm's national managing partner for over 10 years and during his tenure played a key role in positioning Gowlings as one of the largest and most respected law firms in Canada.
