Biography: Insurance & Reinsurance

Ian Hunter QC has been a barrister at the English Bar since 1967. He is a member of the Inner Temple and became a Bencher of that Inn in 1986. He was educated at Cambridge and Harvard Law School and has been a member of Essex Court Chambers since 1968. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1980 and a Deputy High Court Judge in 1993. He is a member of the Bar of New South Wales and became senior counsel in New South Wales in 1994. He has also been a member of the Paris Bar since 1995.

Mr Hunter has always had a broad-based commercial practice with a large part of that practice being concerned with arbitration, both as advocate and as arbitrator. As a junior barrister his practice largely involved shipping work, particularly shipping arbitrations. Since taking silk in 1980 he has been involved in many arbitrations both of a general commercial nature and of a more specialised variety.

In recent years an increasing amount of his time has been spent sitting as arbitrator. He is regularly appointed in ICC and LCIA arbitrations and has also been appointed by AAA, SIAC and the Vienna International Arbitral Centre. In addition, he has a particular speciality in insurance and reinsurance arbitration and construction arbitration and many of his appointments as arbitrator are ad hoc appointments in these fields. He sits both as party-appointed arbitrator and as chairman. He is vice president of ARIAS UK, the Insurance and Reinsurance Arbitration Society. He is also an accredited arbitrator with ARIAS US and a number of his appointments involve US and mid-Atlantic arbitrations. He is a member of the Formula One International Contract Recognition Board.
