Biography: Competition

A vice chair of Hunton & Williams' global competition practice, Bruce Hoffman has extensive experience with antitrust and competition matters, including merger review, government investigations and litigation. Since returning to Hunton & Williams in 2005 from the Federal Trade Commission, he has advised clients in industries including metals, music, pharmaceuticals, retail, chemicals, automotive, medical devices, telecommunications, paper, energy, airlines, defence, electricity, title insurance, and others. He also represented a major telecommunications company in defending an antitrust challenge to a consumated merger, a national health insurer in defending antitrust claims regarding a purported group boycott, a multinational food company in class action antitrust litigation alleging price fixing, and a company defending a European Commission statement of objections.

From 2001 through 2004, Mr Hoffman served at the FTC's Bureau of Competition, first as associate director and then as deputy director. He oversaw the bureau's antitrust enforcement activities, including merger reviews, litigation, and policy development, and had direct responsibility for two of the bureau's four merger divisions. He supervised high-profile merger and conduct investigations including monster.com/hotjobs.com, Wal-Mart/Supermercados Amigo, and several energy industry transactions.

A member of the District of Columbia and Florida bars, Mr Hoffman has held leadership positions with the American Bar Association. Presently, Mr Hoffman is an associate editor of the Antitrust Law Journal.

Mr Hoffman received a JD from the University of Florida College of Law where he was Order of the Coif and received the WD McDonald Prize for graduating first in class. He earned a BA from Penn State University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
