Biography: Commercial Litigation

Mr Hierro Hernández-Mora is a senior partner and general manager of the law firm Cuatrecasas Abogados. For the past 13 years he has been the director of its litigation and arbitration division, which presently is made up of more than 220 lawyers organised into 33 specialised teams. He has extensive experience in designing strategies to resolve conflicts between companies through negotiation, mediation or, as a last resort, arbitration or legal proceedings before the courts.

A respected dispute resolution all-rounder, he has solid experience acting as arbitrator in domestic and international arbitration. He has been particularly active recently in construction, energy, distribution, M&A and contractual liability arbitration cases, as well as in cases involving breach of competition rules.

As well as featuring in this publication, Mr Hierro is considered a 'leading lawyer' in his field in all of the most prestigious international directories, including Chambers Global, the European Legal 500, Which Lawyer Yearbook, PLC Global Counsel 3000, Dispute Resolution Handbooks, Expert Guides and European Legal Experts (Legal Business), as well as in the Spanish economic press (Diario Expansión and La Gaceta de los Negocios).

He is a founding partner and an arbitrator of the Civil and Corporate Court of Arbitration (CIMA). He is an arbitrator of the Madrid Court of Arbitration (Official Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Madrid), and also a regular arbitrator before the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). In addition, he is a member of the commission of arbitration of the Spanish committee of the ICC, of the Latin American arbitration group of the ICC, vice president of the Spanish section of the International Law Association and a founding member of the Spanish Club of Arbitration.

He is also vocal counsellor of the Instituto de Empresa, one of the world's most renowned business schools.

Mr Hierro is the co-author of several books on arbitration including La Nueva Ley de Arbitraje (Biblioteca Expansión, Madrid 2004); Comentarios a la Nueva Ley de Arbitraje 60/2003, de 23 de diciembre (Thomson-Aranzadi, Navarra 2004); and the Spanish chapter in Getting the Deal Through - Arbitration 2006 (Law Business Research, London 2006.)

Mr Hierro received his Bachelor of Laws from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1981. He completed his studies in London, Paris and Brussels and has been a member of the Madrid bar association since 1983. Since 1985, he has been counsel for the state, on leave of absence. He speaks Spanish, English and French.
