Biography: Competition

Calvin Goldman is the chair of Blakes, competition group. His practice covers all aspects of Canadian competition law, including domestic and international mergers, cartels, civil reviewable matters and counselling on trade practices. Cal obtained an LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School (1973 gold medallist) and an LLM from Harvard Law School (1974). Following a clerkship in the Supreme Court of Canada and his call to the Ontario bar, he practised competition law and litigation at Blakes. He was the assistant special counsel for the attorney general of Canada in the uranium cartel proceedings of 1977 to 1983. In 1986, he was appointed director (since renamed "commissioner") of the Competition Bureau in the Canadian government. From 1987 to 1989, he was a vice chair of the competition law and policy committee of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). He returned to private practice in 1990.

Cal is chair of the International Chamber of Commerce's (ICC) task force on competition and international trade; vice chair of the ICC's task force on the International Competition Network; vice chair of the competition committee of the business and industry advisory committee to the OECD; non-US lawyer representative to council, American Bar Association (ABA) section of antitrust law; and North America regional vice chair of the Lex Mundi antitrust competition and trade practice group. He is past chair of the ABA section of antitrust law's international task force; past chair of the competition policy committee of the Canadian Council for International Business; former council member of the ABA section of antitrust law; past international editor for the ABA's Antitrust Magazine (2001 to 2002); past co-chair of the international antitrust & foreign competition law committee, ABA section of antitrust law (1999 to 2001), and past chair of the Canadian Bar Association's national competition law section (1995 to 1996). He is a member of the advisory boards of BNA Antitrust & Trade Regulation Report and Canadian Competition Record, and co-editor of Competition Law of Canada (Juris).

Consistently ranked at the top level of his profession in international surveys, Cal is the only Canadian recognised as a "star performer" for competition law in Chambers Global: The World's Leading Lawyers for Business 2008; this highest ranking is one he has held for a number of years. Cal also is the only Canadian lawyer to be identified in Law Business Research's The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers as one of the 16 most highly regarded competition lawyers in the world, and he was named one of the world's top 25 competition and antitrust lawyers in Legal Media Group's The Best of the Best 2006. He has been awarded Martindale-Hubbell's highest accolade, an AV rating, for his legal expertise and professional reputation. Nationally, Cal is listed in the top category of the competition/antitrust law section in The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory for Toronto practitioners, and he is included in The Lexpert/American Lawyer Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada and The Best Lawyers in Canada.
