Biography: Aviation

Geert Goeteyn specialises in EU and national competition, merger and regulatory law across a number of sectors including automotive, aviation, biotechnology, consumer goods, high-tech, oil and paper. He has represented clients in complex investigations and has advised on competition law issues relating to joint ventures, licensing, discount schemes, pricing policies and distribution and supply arrangements.

Geert regularly advises airlines including United Airlines, SAS, BMI, Lufthansa and others on mergers, alliances and other cooperation agreements. He has been involved in most cases that have shaped competition law policy in the aviation sector, including, among others, Lufthansa/SAS/United Airlines, Lufthansa/SAS/British Midland, United Airlines/British Midland, United Airlines/US Airways, British Airways/American Airlines and Air France/KLM (the latter two for a third party intervener). Geert has also advised a number of airlines on article 82 issues arising from proposed travel agent commission structures and pricing policies. He also advises on regulatory issues such as slots and CRS.

Geert currently represents a major US airline in the ongoing EC air cargo investigation.

Geert is a member of the European Aviation Club and the European Air Law Association. He is a regular speaker at conferences and lectures on the application of EC competition and regulatory law at the LLM Air and Space Law programme of the University of Leiden, the Netherlands. Geert is frequently quoted in the press, regularly contributes to books and journals and is an editor (together with Howrey partner Trevor Soames) of the aviation chapter of the Butterworths Competition Law Encyclopaedia. He is qualified to practise law in Belgium and England & Wales and has an LLM in European Law.
