Business Crime

Biography: Business Crime

Neil is the joint global head of DLA Piper's litigation and regulatory group. He specialises in white-collar crime work in a corporate environment. Neil's particular area of expertise involves guiding clients through investigations and prosecutions undertaken by a range of UK regulators, including the Serious Fraud Office, HM Revenue & Customs, the Financial Services Authority, the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform and the Office of Fair Trading. In addition, Neil has considerable experience in liaising with US regulators (including the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission) where UK investigations become interconnected with the US regulatory regime. He has extensive practical knowledge of the execution of search warrants, interviews under caution and compulsion statements, not least as he is a former Metropolitan Police officer and prosecuted for the Department of Trade & Industry.

Since joining private practice, Neil has been involved in many of the largest, high-profile investigations carried out by UK regulators. He is appointed to undertake investigatory work as an independent specialist on behalf of regulatory bodies. Neil regularly advises on corporate governance issues and in particular undertakes Audit Committee investigations post the implementation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. He also advises on risk management, internal controls, extradition, cross-border arrest and senior executive accountability.

Neil is widely recognised as an international expert in criminal and regulatory investigations. He regularly advises non-UK corporates as to the UK and European regulatory climate. He lectures and advises companies on managing internal procedures, global regulatory compliance, and cross-border civil and criminal liability. Neil is frequently quoted in the broadcast media and national press and writes regularly in the legal and specialist trade press.
