Emmanuel Gaillard heads Shearman & Sterling's international arbitration practice. He is considered as one of the finest arbitration specialists in the world.
Emmanuel Gaillard has acted as counsel in over 250 commercial arbitrations, ad hoc and under all major international arbitration rules. He is also widely recognized as a leading expert on ICSID and international investment arbitration. He has acted as arbitrator in over 50 international proceedings, primarily under the aegis of the ICC and ICSID. He regularly appears as expert witness on arbitration law issues, before arbitral tribunals or national courts.
Emmanuel Gaillard is a professor of law at the University of Paris XII, where he teaches international arbitration and private international law. He has written extensively on all aspects of arbitration law, in French and in English. He is a co-author and co-editor of Fouchard Gaillard Goldman On International Commercial Arbitration, the leading and most comprehensive publication in this field, and the author of the most extensive commentary on ICSID case law, entitled La Jurisprudence du CIRDI.
Emmanuel Gaillard is a member, appointed by France, of the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators. He served as a member of the LCIA Court and is a member of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA). He chairs the International Arbitration Institute (IAI).
Emmanuel Gaillard is an Agrégé des Facultés de droit and holds a PhD from the University of Panthéon-Assas (Paris II). He also holds a DEA in Criminal Law and a DEA in Private Law from the University of Panthéon-Assas (Paris II). He speaks French, English and Italian.
