Biography: Mining

Alexey Frolov is a partner in the Moscow office of Baker & McKenzie. He specialises in natural resources law, corporate and commercial law. Prior to joining Baker & McKenzie in 2000, he worked for an international oil company in central Asia. He became a partner in 2006.

Alexey has been involved in several key M&A deals in natural resources industries in Russia, including gold mining, coal mining, and oil and gas. He has advised both western and Russian companies on issues such as acquisition of mining assets, corporate restructuring, joint-venture agreements, environmental protection, and production-sharing agreements in Russia and the CIS. Alexey has conducted due diligence reviews of mining assets, and counselled clients on various issues related to grant, transfer and termination of mineral rights.

Alexey's knowledge of natural resources law, his diverse experience, legal ability and professionalism have won him widespread acclaim among lawyers and the business community. He has been recommended for his "metals and mining expertise" by Chambers Global, and for "his succinct analysis and ability to structure a deal across a range of practice areas" by Chambers Europe.

Alexey has authored a number of publications on licensing in the natural resources industry and subsoil law issues, and frequently participates in top-level international conferences. He graduated from the Moscow State Linguistic University in 1995 with honours and received his law degree with honours in 2000 from the Moscow State Law Academy. Alexey received his LLM degree from Harvard Law School in 2006. In addition to his native Russian, he speaks English fluently and Spanish and Portuguese fairly well.
