Biography: Competition

Cani Fernández is the director of the firm's EU and competition law group and head of the Brussels office with expertise in both EU and competition law practice.

She advises leading Spanish and international companies on Spanish and EC competition law matters, including advice on merger control, antitrust (defence in cartel and abuse of dominance investigations by national and European authorities) and litigation in these fields. Her experience covers a wide range of sectors, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food, automotive, media, telecommunications and energy. Recent deals and advice include Enel/Acciona/Endesa; Suez/LaCaixa/Agbar; Catalana de Occidente/Crédito y Caución/Atradius (merger control); Choline chloride; Bitumen (cartels); Coca-Cola undertaking; and Enel Viesgo (dominance).

Ms Fernández also advises companies, governments and EU institutions in cases involving wider issues of EC law (public procurement, REACH, plant and crop protection regulation, among others), including landmark cases such as Codorniu's locus standi action; IQV's successful action before the ECJ, including interim measures; representation of Danone in defence of its Bio trade-mark during reform of regulation on organic production; and representation of the European Commission before the ECJ in several public procurement cases.

She is consistently recognised as one of Spain's leading specialists in competi-tion and community law matters, being ranked as one of the leading individuals by Chambers Global Guide, Which Lawyer, Global Counsel and other publications.

Ms Fernández teaches in Spain and the US. She was référendaire and chef de cabinet at the Court of First Instance of the European Communities (1994-1997).
