Biography: Commercial Arbitration

John Fellas is a partner in the New York office of Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP, practising in the fields of international litigation and arbitration.

Mr Fellas has practised law in both the US and England, and as well as being a member of the New York Bar, he is also a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales. He has served as counsel, and as chair, sole arbitrator and co-arbitrator, in arbitrations under the AAA, ICC and ad hoc rules. He also serves on the mediation panel of the District Court for the Southern District of New York.

He has also been retained to act as an expert witness on US law in proceedings in other countries, most recently by the United States Department of Justice.

He has spoken widely on issues of international litigation and arbitration, including at National Workshop for US District Judges, sponsored by the Federal Judicial Center. He also chairs the annual programme 'International Business Litigation and Arbitration', sponsored by the Practising Law Institute. He has also published many articles in the field, including in the United States, Europe, Korea, India and New Zealand. He is editor of the book Transatlantic Commercial Litigation and Arbitration (Oceana 2004).

He is a member of the American Law Institute, the American Society of International Law, the International Bar Association, and the London Court of International Arbitration.

He received a BA (Hons) from the University of Durham, and both an LLM and an SJD from the Harvard Law School.
