Biography: Commercial Arbitration

César Coronel is one of the founding partners of Coronel & Pérez, one of the leading law firms in Ecuador. He has led teams in complex litigation and arbitration, corporate acquisitions, privatisations and concessions of public services, and several projects in the energy sector.

Born in Guayaquil on 24 April 1952, he obtained both his law degree and his doctorate at the Catholic University of Guayaquil. He later obtained an LLM in International Legal Studies at Georgetown University, in Washington, DC.

Dr Coronel is a member of the International Court of Arbitration at the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris. He is also a member of the advisory council (2006-) at the Arbitration Center of the Guayaquil Chamber of Commerce. From 1998 to 2004, he was a member of the panel of conciliators of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) at the World Bank.

From 2000 to 2003, he was alternate executive director for Chile and Ecuador at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, DC.

Dr Coronel has been involved in the past four years, as counsel or legal expert, in some of the most important arbitration cases regarding foreign investment in Ecuador. He also participates frequently as arbitrator or counsel in commercial arbitrations in Ecuador. He was the supervisor of companies for Guayaquil from 1982 to 1984. Also, he was dean of the Law School at the Catholic University of Guayaquil from 1988 to 1991, and has been professor of Civil Law at the same institution for more than 20 years.

He is fluent in Spanish and English.
