John Cook is of counsel in O'Melveny & Myers' European antitrust/competition practice, working in Brussels and London, specialising in antitrust/competition, EC law, aviation and utilities regulation. John's experience and expertise has been gained over more than 30 years within government, the UK Office of Fair Trading and in private practice.
Educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, John spent nearly a decade at the UK Office of Fair Trading and the Department of Trade and Industry, where his work covered a wide range of competition and EU issues and privatisation work. He joined Norton Rose in 1988 to establish its competition and EU practice and latterly was managing partner of its Brussels office.
John has an impressive record of success in a wide spectrum of high-profile UK and EU cases. These include merger proceedings, such as TUI/First Choice (for TUI AG), Stena/P&O (the first merger inquiry under the UK Enterprise Act 2002), and the seminal Airtours/First Choice (for the main objector), as well as monopoly inquiries, price cap reviews, cartel investigations, complaints, and litigation before the UK and European courts. Institutional clients have included the European Commission, the UK Office of Rail Regulation and the New Zealand government.
John Cook is a recognised leader in EU and UK competition law and consistently highly ranked in many specialised publications. He is co-author of EC Merger Control, published by Thomson/Sweet & Maxwell (4th edition, 2005).
