Mr Cole has handled dozens of public company mergers, including the following valued at more than $1 billion: Clear Channel/THLee and Bain (representing special committee - pending); EOP/Blackstone (pending); Exelon/PSEG (terminated); Alberto-Culver/Clayton Dubilier; Tellabs/AFC; IMC/Cargill; Williams/Barrett (including the successful defense against Shell); Kimberly-Clark/Scott Paper; Monsanto/DeKalb Genetics; Jefferson Smurfit/Stone Container; Interpublic Group/True North; Wolters Kluwer/CCH; Fred Meyer/QFC; Aon/Alexander & Alexander; IMC Global/Vigoro; Tribune/Renaissance Communications; and LBOs of Northwest Industries and Ohio Mattress. Corporate governance assignments have included acting as special counsel to boards of directors and to the audit, special transaction and investigative committees of many public corporations.
Mr Cole taught the corporate governance seminar at the University of Chicago Law School. He is a frequent lecturer and panelist on a variety of corporate and securities law subjects.
In 2001, Mr Cole was recognised by Chambers Global, the London-based publication, as one of 26 US lawyers included in its list of the Global 100 Lawyers - "lawyers who stand out from their colleagues and are recognised internationally".
Mr Cole serves on the boards of the University of Chicago, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and The Chicago Council on Global Affairs. He is a member of the Commercial Club of Chicago and its civic committee. He is a member of the legal advisory committee to the board of the New York Stock Exchange. He received his JD from the University of Chicago (Order of the Coif) and his AB from the Johns Hopkins University (Phi Beta Kappa).
