Biography: Competition

Gina is a senior partner in Gilbert + Tobin's competition & regulation practice. Gina leads much of Gilbert + Tobin's work in obtaining or opposing competition law clearances, for mergers and joint ventures in Australia and New Zealand. She specialises in competition and economic regulatory advice and representing clients before the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, New Zealand Commerce Commission, Reserve Bank of Australia, and other regulators. Consistently ranked as one of Australia's top-tier competition lawyers by clients, legal directories and peers, Gina is a recognised leader in complex merger clearances for acquisitions and industry consolidation. Gina has led a range of landmark competition rulings in the financial services, retailing, manufacturing and media sectors.

Gina is known for achieving outstanding commercial results, through innovative solutions and perseverance, even when previous applications for clearance have been refused. She was the lead competition and regulatory advisor on the A$47 billion Westpac/St George Bank merger, which remains the largest completed merger in Australian corporate history.

Gina has successfully represented clients in complex cartel investigations and prosecutions. Gilbert + Tobin has been involved in a significant number of cartel leniency applications under the ACCC and NZCC's amnesty policies in relation to national and international cartels. Gina was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of California, Berkeley, majoring in US competition law, financial institutions regulation and securities regulation. She was awarded the University Medal for Economics at the University of Sydney.
