Biography: Commercial Arbitration

James Carter is a member of Sullivan & Cromwell's litigation, antitrust, intellectual property and project finance groups and coordinator of the firm's international arbitration group, specialising in disputes arising from joint ventures, investments and other international commercial arrangements. His work includes analysis of issues and drafting of mediation and arbitration clauses in international joint ventures and other financial and commercial agreements; advice on business decisions and plans that pose arbitration and litigation risks; development of strategies to resolve complex international disputes such as those involving multiple claims and parties, multiple jurisdictions and parallel or closely related arbitral and judicial proceedings; and representation of clients in arbitration, mediation and other alternative dispute resolution proceedings, many of which involve substantial amounts. Mr Carter's practice also includes litigation in US courts, a significant portion of which relates to international disputes.

Mr Carter has chaired the international law and practice section of the American Bar Association, the international law committee and the international dispute resolution committee of the New York State Bar Association and the international affairs council of the New York City Bar Association. He is immediate past chairman of the board of the American Arbitration Association, a former member of the LCIA Court, a member of the International Court of Arbitration for Sport, and immediate past president of the American Society of International Law.

Mr Carter has advised with respect to and served as counsel in cases in all of the leading arbitration fora, participated in arbitrations as an expert witness and served as an arbitrator in a substantial number of international matters.
