Mr Carpenter has argued five cases in the US Supreme Court and has briefed over 20 additional cases that the Supreme Court decided on the merits. He has also argued over 65 cases in federal courts of appeals and state appellate courts, and briefed numerous other cases on appeal. He has briefed and argued many dispositive motions in federal district courts and state trial courts.
Mr Carpenter is a former law clerk to Associate Justice William J Brennan Jr and to Judge Frank M Coffin of the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. He received his BA from Yale University in 1972, cum laude, and his JD from Boston University School of Law in 1975, magna cum laude. Admissions include the District of Columbia, 1980 and Illinois, 1979.
