Biography: Competition

After a French Baccalaureate C (Academy of Grenoble), Onno Brouwer studied law at the University of Amsterdam. He became a member of the Dutch Bar in 1981. In 1985, he was appointed legal secretary in the cabinet of the Dutch judge of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. He returned to private practice in 1989, in Brussels, as a partner with Stibbe Simont Monahan Duhot. Onno joined Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer in June 2000 and is a member of the firm's antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) practice group. He specialises in European law and European and national competition law.

Through the years, he has represented clients in numerous cases before the national courts, national competition authorities, the European Commission and the EU courts in Luxembourg. He has extensive experience in applying competition law to regulated sectors including the oil, gas, telecoms, air transport and banking sectors, and in the application of antitrust rules to liberal professions. Onno's practice further comprises numerous European Community law cases in Luxembourg involving EU legislation, free movement of goods and services and cases concerning access to EU documents and information.

Onno is chairman of the permanent delegation of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of the European Union to the European Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance of the EU. He also contributes regularly to publications and courses on EU and competition law.
