Biography: Competition

John Briggs is currently Howrey's managing partner for strategy and planning. He was chairman of the firm's antitrust practice from 1995 to 2005 and chairman of the American Bar Association's section of antitrust law from 1995 to 1996. He is a member of the firm's six-partner executive committee and predecessor committees since 1987 and is active in all of Howrey's core areas: antitrust, intellectual property and complex dispute resolution. He spends several weeks each year in the firm's Brussels office, which he established between 2001 and 2002.

Mr Briggs has been lead counsel for many transnational companies in hundreds of mergers, class actions, private antitrust litigations, cartel matters and other commercial litigations, including litigations relating to shareholder liability under various US and EU theories. He represents merging companies in obtaining many clearances on both sides of the Atlantic and successfully litigated contested mergers against both the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice. In private litigations, Mr Briggs has won dozens of cases for defendants and prevailed in all of his plaintiffs' cases.

Mr Briggs has served as an expert witness at the behest of companies and law firms in the US and abroad in proceedings around the world, including Australia, Canada, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. He has published dozens of articles on the subject of antitrust and competition law and policy in the US and Europe. He has also been a member of the advisory board of the Bureau of National Affairs' Antitrust and Trade Regulation Report for over a decade.
