Matthew Brennan provides advice on environmental risks and opportunities in a variety of commercial transactions, chiefly mergers and acquisitions, commercial lending, project finance, real estate and securities offerings. Mr Brennan, who has provided environmental advice in corporate transactions since 1986, joined Sullivan & Cromwell in 1994 and was made special counsel in 1998. His primary expertise involves identifying and assisting clients in understanding environmental risks, helping to structure transactions to minimise those risks and negotiating agreement terms to allocate environmental risks and liabilities between parties. By providing environmental advice on between 100 and 150 transactions in an average year at Sullivan & Cromwell, he has unparalleled insight into current 'market' environmental transaction terms as well as emerging trends in environmental liability risk allocation and risk minimisation. Mr Brennan also provides environmental advice to firm clients on a variety of other environmental matters, including site remediation, compliance, asbestos liability, insurance, environmental personal injury, regulatory interpretation and emissions trading.
